Il trionfo del Tempo
5th February 2023 - 7:30PM
Frimurerlogen - Trondheim, Norway
Music - G.F. Händel
Conductor - Martin Wåhlberg
Orchestra - Orkester Nord
Bellezza - Pauline Texier
Piacere - Gemma Ní Bhriain
Tempo - Kristoffer Appel
Disinganno - Mari Askvik
"Il trionfo del tempo" is in many ways Handel's first opera. He wrote the work in Rome in his early twenties. The work overflows with youthful zeal and courage. Here we hear many of Handel's most famous arias for the first time. He used many of them again and again in later works, for example one of his most famous songs, "Lascia ch'io pianga", which is heard here with the text "Lascia la spina".
We meet the young main character Beauty (Belezza, Pauline Texier) in her search for direction in life. Should she blindly trust her own beauty and seek short-term pleasures in life, as Vellysten (Gemma Ní Bhriain) commands, or should she rather listen to the advice of Time (Kristoffer Appel) and Insight (Mari Askvik)? Based on this dilemma, the opera unfolds as a competition. Which of the three, Voluptuousness, Insight or Time can win over the young Beauty's heart and mind? The stage is set for a durable tug-of-war, which gives Händel the opportunity to offer all he has of musical imagination and drama.
We get to hear "Il trionfo del Tempo" with Barokkfest's own Orkester Nord, who perform here with a production that was played at the Teatro Mayor in Bogota, Colombia, in autumn 2022. We meet a European star team of up-and-coming opera soloists, with the soprano Pauline Texier in the lead as Belezza, the Irish mezzo-soprano Gemma Ní Bhriain, the Norwegian mezzo-soprano Mari Askvik who last made a name for herself in this repertoire in the UK with the role of Bradamante in Handel's opera Alcina (Opera North) and the Danish tenor Kristoffer Appel.

''Her approach was restrained and musicianly, her tone well maintained through her range. She gave the impression of being solid as a rock. And her good taste extended to her single encore, Britten’s arrangement of The Salley Gardens, where (Hélio) Vida kept up the high standards he set throughout the concert. Let’s hope we get to hear more of this young singer soon.''
